Upper Saddle River Police Department Mission Statement: To Provide for the Safety, Protection and Welfare of all Citizens through Fair, Professional and Proactive Enforcement of the Federal, State & Local laws in the Borough of Upper Saddle River
The Upper Saddle River Police Department covers 5.3 square miles and serves a resident population of approximately 8,500, and a daytime population of 12,000. Our department is staffed by 18 sworn Police Officers, 3 full time and 5 part time Communications Officers as well as a full time Records Administrator. There are six divisions within the police department, Patrol, Investigative, Traffic, Communications, Records and Juvenile. The Upper Saddle River Police Department has adopted an aggressive community policing philosophy, which strengthens the relationship between the police and the residents. On Thursday May 24th 2012, the New Jersey Commission for Law Enforcement Accreditation officially voted for our agency to receive accreditation designation. The members of the police department also work closely with the Schools, the D.A.R.E. program and the Youth Guidance Council to foster a good relationship with the youth of Upper Saddle River. The Borough of Upper Saddle River is considered a safe suburban community for raising families.

Operating Divisions
Patrol Division
The Patrol Division of the Upper Saddle River Police Department, under the command of Lieutenant David Lally provides around the clock service to the citizens and visitors in the community. These uniformed officers are highly trained and educated individuals who protect life and property, preserve public peace, provide citizen assistance, enforce criminal and motor vehicle laws and respond to emergency and non-emergency situations. All the officers of the Police Department are dedicated and committed professionals who would not hesitate to place their life in danger in order to protect and serve the residents and guests of the Borough of Upper Saddle River.
Traffic Safety Division
The Upper Saddle River Police Department Traffic Safety Divisions main goal is to foster greater traffic and pedestrian safety within the borough. This goal is met by educating the public, enforcing motor vehicle laws, conducting child seat education and installation programs, driving while intoxicated checkpoints, and traffic safety presentations. The Traffic Safety Officer is highly trained in radar operation, accident investigation, accident reconstruction, DWI investigation, and is also a Certified Child Seat Technician. Detective Bureau
The Upper Saddle River Detective Division is staffed with two full time detectives and is under the command of Detective Lieutenant Edward Kane. The Detective Division investigates all criminal activity that occurs in the borough of Upper Saddle River, and is responsible for following these cases to a successful prosecution. The detectives also work closely with other law enforcement agencies in the surrounding communities and throughout the county and state, to assist each other in various aspects of the investigation process. Communications Division
The Upper Saddle River Police Department Communications Center is the nerve center for all radio, telephone, teletype and computer communications. The Communications Officers are the vital link between citizens and all public safety services of the borough. All of the emergency communications for the borough’s Police Department, Fire Department, Rescue Squad and Ambulance Corps are handled from this location. Communications, also known as dispatch, is staffed by 3 full time civilians and 5 part time civilians who work rotating shifts, covering the “desk” 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The duties of our communications officers cover a wide array of daily tasks. Besides handling all radio communications and answering all emergency and non-emergency phone calls into the police department, the communications officers are responsible to research and retrieve information to assist officers on calls and detectives conducting investigations. In order to handle this task each communications officer must go through training at the Bergen County Police Academy.

What to do when calling 911
- When do you Call 911? Please call for all crimes in progress, medical emergencies, fires, serious motor vehicle accidents, or any other incident which may involve a life threatening situation.
- What do I need to tell the communications officer? You will need to provide your name, the phone number from which you are calling from, and the location and nature of the emergency. Try to remain calm and speak with a clear voice while providing this information.
- What should I do if I dial 9-1-1 in error? DO NOT HANG UP! It is important for the caller to stay on the line in the event of an error. If you accidentally dialed 9-1-1 just advise the communications officer it was an error. Our department’s policy is to investigate all abandoned or misdialed calls to determine whether or not an emergency may actually exist.
